I've been meaning to write proper reviews for both these novels since literally last year, but as I've been unable to find the time, headspace of energy (due to having had to work 6 to 6.5 days per week since the start of January and still counting, thanks capitalism), short, impressions-based ones will have to do.

The Rose in the Abyss )

Salieri and Mozart )

I read the Chinese originals of both novels here and here on JJWXC. For Salieri and Mozart, I also read a print-exclusive extra from the mainland Chinese print edition of the novel.

To celebrate volume 4 coming out, the official K-9 account over at [twitter.com profile] k_9comic published a manga preview trailer (x.com) with Oboro and Ren's voices.

Ren's voice: Ise Mariya
Oboro's voice: Miyano Mamoru

You may picture me half-dead in a corner. Oboro sounds even creepier than I imagined him, in all the best ways. Ren is *swoons*

In addition, the extras for volume 4 involve a couple of 4-koma strips and therefore it is now officially confirmed that

do I even need a spoiler tag for this? It's not plot-relevant. Not yet. It's relevant to my blood pressureKagari and Fujimaru do live together, and Kagari does borrow Fujimaru's clothes as he pleases.

I'll share proper(ish) translations soon. Just. Need to go curl up in a corner for a while first.

Volume 4 is seriously awesome and packs in so many of my favourite OT4 scenes, including the one that sold me on them, and then so many interactions after that! And it ends on the chapter that introduces the two little guys I was talking about the other day, with that hand-over-mouth panel too. What a beautiful day. My heart can only take so much, though.

S4: Day 39 (1135)

Yesterday I spent the day in recovery. The drama of the phone calls sucked so much out of me, I just didn't have it in me to do much else. And it's okay, though a bit frustrating. I keep underestimating the amount of self-care I need.

As a whole, because we're all feeling better physically, I should be able to reset the house so we can feel better mentally as well, and that will result in a lot of wonderful creative adventures.

I will be saving my creation time for later in the day, though. We are going to take a walk at the mall soon, and the afternoon I might focus on just reenergizing and organizing ideas so I can have a strong evening.

Overall, I need to make sure I'm doing this right. That I'm starting each writing session with prayer, and that I remember who I am writing for. I am not writing by my own abilities, but by those of the one who made me.

Currently:
Playing: "Final Fantasy X" perfect run attempt. "Death Stranding". "Octopath Traveler: Zero". "Cat Quest II" replay. "Elden Ring".
Reading: "Starling House" print. "The Witching Hour" audio. "Ignite Me" audio.

Time sure keeps moving forward whether I keep track of it or not 😆 I'm still playing catch-up on everything, but by doing one thing at the time, I'm actually making progress - huzzah!

One thing I'm getting to today is going through what books I read last year.

In 2025 I read 90 books, which I'm fairly pleased with. Sadly had to give up on the Book Bingo I was doing because I didn't have the brainpower to think through my book choices - but there's always next/this year 😊

If you're curious about what those 90 books were, here's a link to a summary on Storygraph.

Some thoughts and comments )

Those were my book thoughts from last year! And I've already got started on my reading for this year 😁

Any books/comics/manga people are really looking forward to read?

I wrote some words yesterday. Today, I am doing more planning than writing. Which is fine. I'm losing sight of my mission already, and I need to get back on track. So tonight, that is the goal. Refind the mission.

In movie news, Cineplex has a listing for Zhu Yilong's new movie, Scare Out, which is apparently opening in Canada on Feb. 17. I refuse to let myself be excited about this, after having so much hope about Dongji Rescue last summer. But maybe it'll open here and I'll be able to see it! At least the 17th is before the crunch at work starts.

Reading: To shake things up a bit from Kurosagi, this week I reread the first two volumes of Hikaru no Go. In both of these cases, I'm pretty much relying on Goodreads to tell me when I get to volumes I haven't previously read. Awkwardly for my sense of "what even is time?", this means that I now know that I first read vol. 1 of Hikaru no Go in 2006 and vol. 1 of The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service in 2008.

My sense of how far I got into Hikaru no Go is completely nonexistent, since I know I read some number of volumes at some point, and I saw some of the anime (long enough ago that I know we were still living in the co-op we moved out of over fifteen years ago), and [personal profile] scruloose and I (much later) saw the c-drama in its entirety. It's all rather a jumble. But seeing the c-drama did inspire me to finish buying the manga, and I guess its time has come!

I did wind up reading all of Dungeon Crawler Carl, and the upshot, given my uncertainty about finishing it to begin with, is unsurprisingly that I doubt I'll pick up the second book. I think it's very safe to say that LitRPG is not my thing. I did wind up liking the book more overall than I would've thought back around the 40% mark or so, though.

Watching: We're caught up on The Pitt and one episode behind on Frieren. We've also seen the second episode of Midnight Mass, which has a lot of animal harm; I don't have any triggers that I'm aware of, but it was enough to be upsetting.

Playing: I think I've finished Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven, which is to say that I've finished the main plot and done a few wrapping-up things, leaving me free to idly manage the cult and do dungeon runs, but that's usually when I wander off.

Weathering: We're having some of what I would call Normal Snow for the second time this week. The first time, a few days ago, I realized I've started to basically think in terms of "winter days that are cold but not much is happening outside" and "snowstorms", without much in between, but that's probably a result of leaving the house so rarely as much as it's a byproduct of climate change.

Oh man, I didn't mean to let almost a whole month go by between posts. To be fair, it's been a busy month. I'm even struggling to keep my physical journal updated, since whole days go by without me even sitting down at my desk!

The course I've been attending is almost over. Monday will be our last day together. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.
On one hand, there have been times when I've felt immensely out of place, and interacting with the people there always meant I needed to put up a mask of sorts. On the other, we've been together for almost three months. They're not bad people in any way, and we've shared some really emotional moments. I think I'm gonna miss them, but we're all such different people, in such different places in our lives, that I don't think we're gonna keep in touch all that much.
We're also all pretty exhausted by the rhythm of the course, so I do look forward to being able to relax a little... but I have to admit that having that kind of structure forced on me makes me function better. From Tuesday on, I'm gonna have to come up with my own specific structure, as I'm gonna have to start studying for something. I hope I can do it.

Since the start of the year, we've spent almost all mornings during the weekend at my aunt's place. My grandma moved there a few weeks ago. Well, "moved" isn't exactly the right word, but she's there now. Which means that it almost feels like a normal family reunion when we're all there, although (thank fuck) a few relatives are missing. It's insane how chill those occasions can be if you just take some people out of the picture.

Yippeeeee.

My clothes from Japan arrived!
I'll just post the JSK here:

I'll definitely be buying again, now that I know they'll actually arrive!
(But most of the nice JSKs are so expensive... hmmmph...)

And, to make today even better, I finished my last exam today - academic year and Honours degree finally over!
I didn't do much celebrating (other than a happy little Spanish Latte and trying on my new clothes (and subsequently rendering my room a complete mess) and a little nap in between), but tomorrow is when I'll really start to enjoy my newfound freedom.
A little broke, but free nonetheless. Owch.

Looking forward, how are you planning to spend your weekend?

   - I'm going to make up for not writing all week by having a writing marathon
   - I'm going to keep writing at my current rate and see how it goes
   - I have other plans, but I might have time to get some writing in
   - I'm going to take a break from writing
