A quick update, as I have thoughts on my mind that I fear are keeping me from sleeping just yet.
I feel that I should write more poetry, and perhaps take a short break from the fanfiction side of things.
I've been feeling slightly uninspired in that regard. I need maybe just a month of rest before I start the next fanfic.

That is all. I wish to write more poetry. Pretty things.
It will still be about you, though.
Everything is about you.

Grooming dogs, year unknown.

Grooming dogs grooming dogs
These are the torn pages
From my ninth grade prize-giving
That I was so proud to attend

My mother showed me off
To the chemist and the neighbours
To a world with sharp teeth
And eyes for smart girls like me

So she groomed dogs
On the back of these worn pages
They ran off along the black ink
So fast that she tripped and fell

When I came home with my award
My small and shaky hand in hers
I slept with a smiling heart
As she groomed dogs all night

A simple Sunday.

Dad visited today.

We enjoyed brunch at Honeybun Café in Observatory, where I had a Caprese sandwich with chips, and he had a chocolate waffle. His sweet tooth never fails to amuse me. I also had a red cappuccino, whereas dad just had a regular one.
For those who don't know, a red cappuccino is made with rooibos tea, giving it a honeyed, sweeter flavour. As a South African, it's one of my favourites - I'd even say its my pride and joy.

Rooibos tea is something, that if I ever found myself in another country, I'd make sure to seek out and drink, to remind myself of the comfort of home. That, and milk tart, or "melktert". A creamy, vanilla pudding tart dusted with cinnamon. There truly is no greater joy in life than your ouma (grandmother) or your tannie (auntie) serving up a plate of their homemade milk tart, fresh and warm, on a fine china plate that you will one day receive in your little trousseau. In fact, groottante (great-aunt) has wrapped up a beautiful teaset for me to receive upon my (hypothetical, for now) marriage. One day, I will have all the rooibos tea and milktart I could want, in those cups and on those plates.

Speaking of which, I also did some light shopping. Bought The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, a writer and a woman within whom I see a shimmering reflection of myself.
And speaking of tea, look at this teapot I scored for R195 ($10.86 American). Isn't it adorable? The bottom says "FOREIGN" and "Regency Fine Arts". I have no idea if these labels ascribe any sort of grand merit or value to the item, but it's a lovely trinket, regardless.

Today was sweet and simple. May God be with me for the coming week ahead.

Today is Persona 3's 19th anniversary!!
I have been busy the past weeks, so I don't have anything for it though.

But I'm excited for next year's! It's the 20th one, I wonder if Atlus will do anything...
I also noticed we celebrate P3 in March 5th way more than on the actual game anniversary 🤣
Maybe it's because all fans played thru tne ending, but not everyone keeps tabs on release dates?

Anyways, thanks you Atlus once again flr creating Persona 3! I might've had a rocky start with it the very first time I played, but now holds a big part on my heart.
People are so annoying about them (I wish the Persona/SMT fandom wasn't such a cesspool...) but all the different versions and all the adaptations is something amazing and I love it so much.
There's nothing like being able to llay your favourite game 5 times and them being a different experience every time. Or finding new info bits and scenes in CD Dramas, stage plays, and such. I love P3: The Multimedia Project.

And of course, the most important thing: Thanks you P3 for giving me my wife Aigis 💛

Can anyone recommend a non-fiction book about the Napoleonic Wars that's more focused on the sociology and politics of the era than the nitty gritty of the battles? High level overviews of the various engagements are fine but my eyes glaze over when confronted with twenty pages of detailed battle descriptions and military tactics. Unfortunately most people who write war histories tend to want to talk way more about that sort of thing than I have patience for.

Hello on Sunday! What kind of a writing day has it been so far today -- or if today hasn't gotten going yet, how did you fare yesterday?

       - I thought about my fic once or twice
       - I wrote
       - I did some planning and/or outlining
       - I did research and/or canon review
       - I edited
       - I've sent my fic off to my beta
       - I posted today!
       - I'm taking a break
       - I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment

Sunday Discussion:  It's a new writing week, and that means a fresh start. Maybe you had a great writing week last week, or maybe last week wasn't the greatest for getting writing things done -- what kind of goals do you have for keeping up your momentum or starting off fresh this week?

Weekly proof of life: mainly media

We made it to the little market down the road for the second week running and found the first vendor we visited down to his last several boxes of raspberries, so we bought two and headed back home. First raspberries of the season!

(I think yesterday was the first time I ever actually stopped and noticed why raspberries are called that.)

Reading: In non-fiction, I'm still reading through Tamar Adler's An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace.

On the fiction front, last week I read Cameron Reed's The Fortunate Fall, relatively recently (and finally!) reissued under her current name after its first life as an award-winning SFF novel under her deadname literal decades ago. (I believe her upcoming novel is her first since this one!) It didn't actually hit my emotional buttons very hard (which isn't indicative of how anyone else might react), but it's beautifully constructed and executed. I see why it's so beloved by so many people. ^_^

I also read We Are All Completely Fine (Daryl Gregory), which I didn't realize was a novella until I started reading, so it went by pretty quickly. Interesting horror worldbuilding, although other than the characters' specific histories it's almost entirely hinted at or nodded to; I, at least, came away with almost no actual idea of what's actually going on on a larger scale.

And I read the new Murderbot story ("Rapport: Friendship, Solidarity, Communion, Empathy") that Martha Wells released for the show finale (note that Murderbot itself isn't actually present in the story).

Watching: No Leverage this week, I don't think. [personal profile] scruloose and I have agreed to switch this to an "I watch this when I feel like it, and if they're around and feel like it, they'll watch with me" show rather than one we're Watching Together. They enjoy it, but don't feel a burning need to see every episode.

I kind of wonder if I haven't been started a show on my own for so long because I'm sort of subconsciously waiting to be able to watch the rest of Justice in the Dark whenever the whole thing is subbed somewhere.

We've seen the Murderbot finale, and I'm awfully glad the show's been renewed.

Beyond that, the two of us have now watched the very first episode of Silo, having had good luck with Apple SFF shows. I haven't read the books, so I know almost nothing about it.

(I have food stuff to talk about, but I think I'll call this a post and hope to write more later.)

I have researched for the Sappho project I have wanted to write for almost a year and a half now. On and off, but pretty much consistently returning to it. I have a notebook full of historical data, literary notes, etc. In a lot of ways, I've felt ready to embark on this journey for a while, yet I just haven't been able to get started. Too many possibilities. Too many stories I wanted to tell.

It did help, the trilogy idea I got last week-ish and after thinking about my story in terms of it not having to fit into just one novel, it somehow got a lot less overwhelming, although writing three novels is also a feat I'm not sure I'll ever manage.

Maybe that's the reason why I still felt tied by the hands, however - until I just sat down and decided, just because the Anaktoria book is first in the series, doesn't mean I have to write it first. Actually, working backwards towards Sappho's youth might even be easier than working chronologically.

So yesterday, when K. had to admit, she was too tired to write on our project, I sat down with the third and final novel in the series, Kleïs' story, and I wrote a full synopsis and then, dare I say it, I just began writing chapter 1. Just... started pouring words out. It was remarkably easy. I have five pages so far which is nothing, of course, but this project has sat lodged in my throat for the past 18 months, getting something out - and in Danish of all things?? It is a small miracle.

I wish I could share a snippet with you, because I'm actually quite proud, but well. I can give you my word, this is some of the most interesting writing I have ever done. I look forward to picking it back up once the City-verse novel is done and over.

Today, though, was supposed to be in Marie-Claude's name.

I got the idea of writing her New Year address to the people which will fall in the interim between my latest letter for JL from her and the next she receives from him, so it could be interesting to see what she's doing politically in that time. I've been reseaching some Danish PM's New Year addresses from past years and gotten an okay idea about what I want her to touch upon. Seems to be equal parts reflection on the past year and promises for what they want to do in the future.

So I have to think up some political agendas she has. Things she finds important. Education, definitely, but besides that... Finance, since her financial negotiations are coming up in early January, too... Maybe a mix of the two.

I've felt a little off the past two days, I can't really put my finger on why or how. I just feel somewhat disconnected and worried about everything. We're visiting my parents on Thursday which can definitely be part of the reason, but also I just feel... stressed? When K.'s vacation is finally beginning?? Her last day of appointments was Friday, yesterday she spent recuperating and today has felt... very normal We slept in, had good breakfast, getting stuff done... I don't know what it is that's getting to me.

Sometimes, in the past, vacation is a time of change for me, since it fucks with my habits and such, so it usually takes me a couple of days or three to settle in with the new routine (or lack of same). However, K's vacation started last Friday afternoon! This is a bit late in the process to feel this unsettled about it.

Though, of course, she's had plans almost every day the past week. Maybe my system is only catching up now.

Might be another aspect to it. It's very inconvenient either way.

And my ankle is hurting and I'm having flashbacks to when I fell. I just feel very triggered today, I think.

Crap.

I did some thinking about work yesterday, but for the most part I was just trying to make it through the day with my sanity in one piece. My kids were fighting all day. With me. With each other. With life. Just one big fight. Rather than push myself into creating, I decided to focus on their needs and their drama in the hopes of finding a solution.

I didn't find the solution. Today will hopefully be better, but I am busy. I'm not sure how much I'll actually get done. The best I can do is ensure I have success for tomorrow.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter

Horror is generally out of my comfort zone, but I recently watched Sinners, a movie set in an African American community in the American South. This was such a unique and extremely well done perspective on vampires that I decided to try another unusual vampire POV story - The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones.

The narrator at the beginning and end is a struggling academic in 2012, but the bulk of the book is a diary written 100 years earlier by Arthur Beaucarne, a Lutheran pastor in Miles City, Montana. He is approached by a Blackfeet man named Good Stab who wants the pastor to hear his confession.

The author does such a fantastic job of capturing the style of each of his subjects. The use of language is spot on:
A native person whose understanding of the world around him is shaped by centuries of history and told in English in way that embodies both him and his culture; the elderly, academically-trained white pastor who writes in the formal way you encounter in writing of that era; the modern woman struggling towards tenure in the 21st century - the story of these people was so compelling.

Subscription/Access Policy: I don't (currently) make locked posts. Other than that, anyone is free to subscribe, unsubscribe, grant access, revoke access, etc.
About Me/Other Info: I'm a French guy who's constantly trying to post more on this website, and right now what my brain craves is more activity on my Reading page. o7 I'm participating in [community profile] sunshine_revival which has been helping with the posting, but my Reading page is pretty slow and I'd really like to get more people on there so we can all post alongside each other. Or something. I'm mostly looking for people who post about fandom stuff, but the actual fandom isn't super important to me (though if we have fandoms in common, that's great!) I'm more into the vibe of shared enthusiasm/passion, you know? I'll show you the little (size neutral) guys (gender neutral) that make my heart soar, you'll show me yours. That sort of stuff.

Main Fandom: My main fandom is Pokémon, specifically Pokémon X&Y. It's been my ride or die for over a decade now, though I've been a general/more casual Pokémon enjoyer since 1999. I love the creatures (all generations, though I don't know the ScaVio ones very well yet) and I love the characters (especially the Kalosian ones, but my heart is open to most of them.) In general, I'm largely into the games, and not so much into the rest, but that doesn't mean I dislike it.
Other Fandoms: Non-exhaustive list, because I can never remember what I like: .flow, A Series of Unfortunate Events (books & show), Ace Attorney, Amphibia, Animal Crossing, Arcane, Assassin's Creed (mostly Unity), BEASTARS, Far Cry 4, Final Fantasy (7, 9, 15), James Bond (Craig era), The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, Mob Psycho 100, Petscop, Pokémon GO, Portal (1&2), Severance, Silent Hill (2&4), Sonic the Hedgehog (games & movies), Squid Game, Star Wars (movies), Stardew Valley, Super Paper Mario, Tales of Symphonia, Undertale/Deltarune, Vocaloid, Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Yume Nikki, Yuppie Psycho.
OTPs and Ships: My OTP is Professor Sycamore/Lysandre from Pokémon X&Y! Unbeatable! Number one forever! On my death bed I will be thinking about them! Other than that, here's a selection of ships I've been into in the last few years: Redd/Nook (Animal Crossing) Sade/Arno (Assassin's Creed) Ibuki/Louis (BEASTARS) Ganondorf/Link/Zelda (The Legend of Zelda) Serizawa/Touichirou (Mob Psycho 100) Eusine/Morty, Serena/Shauna, almost any male character/Lysandre (Pokémon) In-ho/Gi-hun (Squid Game) Zelos/Regal (Tales of Symphonia) Tachibana/Oda, Majima/Nishiki (Yakuza/Like a Dragon)

Fannish Activities: I draw and write! This year has rendered me a bit too swamped to do much of either (I haven't written anything in months and I miss it a lot) but these are my two main fannish endeavors. I also frequently participate in events (mostly exchanges, but not always) and sometimes even mod/host them. I also have a (WIP) fansite for Pokémon X&Y!
Non-Fannish Interests: Right now, I'm super into webdev and web design. I also like and am curious about all kinds of arts and crafts (trying to get back into sculpting and painting lately, also picked up cross-stitching through one of my partners.) I miss taking long walks around a lake, and I love animals (I have two cats!) I also enjoy washing the dishes...

Come nightfall.

You always leave when the sun rises.

After I've been wrapped in black all evening.
Something that shimmers, crystal-kissed onyx, with you as the stars opalescent.

I prefer to wear white, just like you, though. White dresses have always fascinated me.
Purity, floating things, fluttering cotton in the cold wind, gracing my skin softly.
Tethered, chained, choked in my corset so I don't stain it.

But with you, my hair is loose, my hooded eyes, my sable-silk curls.
I am draped in darkness, because I am safe to be.
I am safe to be impure. I am safe to be imperfect. I am safe to fall into the abyss of my deepest feelings.

Watch as my heart is plunged into endless night, and watch as the break of dawn renews me once more.
Watch as you catch me.

I always see you when the sun sets.

Whether it was the beach at twilight, round the still sun-baked shore,
Or the bitter breeze as I walked in the rain, pondering ponds of sparkling water,
You were there in the sand, in the spotlight of the street lamp.

But I turn towards you, and I cry.
By the light of day, you kiss me goodbye.
And I fall asleep, to wait for you.

Come nightfall.
