Title: The Tyrant Baru Cormorant (The Masquerade series book #3)
Author: Seth Dickinson
Genre: Fantasy

Today I finished the latest book in the Baru Cormorant series (fourth book remains to-be-released), The Tyrant Baru Cormorant. Y'all, Baru is so back.

! Spoilers for books 1 & 2 below !
(Book 1 review) (Book 2 review)

If you've looked at other reviews for the series, you may have seen book 2, The Monster Baru Cormorant, referred to as the series' "sophomore slump." I disagree, but I understand where the feeling comes from. The Monster feels like a prelude, a setting of the board, for The Tyrant. The Monster puts all the pieces in place for the cascade of schemes and plays that come in The Tyrant. They almost feel like one book split into two (which is fair—taken together, they represent about a thousand pages and would make for one mammoth novel).

I have run until I can no longer.
He singes my lungs, the bitter salt
And sweat of the sea.
Sweet white sand
Is all that separates me
From sinking.

Tonight, he swallows me whole.
I spit him out in turn
But blindly scramble for
Purchase, proof, a piece of him
Before he washes away
With the rest.

The stars burn below the black.
I blink, and he buries me.

All I can do is scream.

Fallen.

I've been rather tired lately. Well, I suppose that's what happens when you essentially live the same day, day in and day out, waking up just to roll out of bed and to your desk, and staying up late to daydream about the love and life you wish you had.
Well, aren't I just sad again today.

I need to finish the fanfic. I need to prepare for this interview. I need to sleep. I need someone to love.
I need you.

Today, I got the CDs I'd ordered. I will definitely consider adding some more to my collection. These were basically in mint condition.
I want some more 90s and 00s grungey, gothy, alternative tunes.

Right now, I just finished playing some more of Coffee Talk - this time, with friends, and on stream. It was a lot of fun, if having taken a considerable portion of my evening - but I'd say it was well worth the time spent. Now, I'm winding down and got the electric blanket on.

I'm just so glad it's Friday tomorrow. I've been thinking of doing something with my life. Something, something new, something different. I need to put pen to paper, commit to applying myself. The thing is, I don't know what I want to do.
I'm thinking of pursuing my Masters in CS, or starting over with a Humanities degree, or going into teaching with a PGCE, or just... I don't know, even just volunteering or getting out of the house or doing something with my boring life.

Every day I wake up and I pretend, even for just a glimpse, that it is in your sheets, in your arms where I lay.

And then, the alarm goes off.

May God be with you; good night.

A Drop of Corruption was as good as y'all said. Loved it at least as much as the first book. Love these characters, this world, those mysteries. I hope we get ten more of them!! At least!!!!!!!!!! And the afterword/author's note at the end was kickass, too.

Yay to good books \o/

I took yesterday off so I could regroup from my Tuesday. I had big plans for today, and then I shot myself in the foot. Now I'm going to be lucky if I get anything done. I will try to approach this with positivity and hope. I will not give up just because right now feels hard.

But a lesson has been learned as well.

For no apparent reason, I felt like diving into my Sappho universe today. I've researched for this project the past year and yet, nothing tangible has come of it. I think it must be one of those stories that really takes its time telling - which is fine by me. I'd rather get it right than rush it.

Anyway, because my girlfriend was out of the house to get a new tattoo, I couldn't work on the epistolary thing we're doing, so I pulled out my notebook for the Sappho stories and started leafing through them - and I got some ideas. First off, I can't fit all of this lore around Sappho into just one novel. So right now, I'm looking at a trilogy, a "young Sappho" novel, told from the perspective of Anaktoria, a "pre-exile adult Sappho", told from the perspective of Atthis and finally an older, "post-exile Sappho", returned to Mytilene, told from the perspective of her daughter, Kleïs. I think, like this, I can paint a portrait of Sappho that adds to the picture she already paints of herself in her fragments, rather than telling it from Sappho's PoV and writing on top of her own words. The trilogy will be in Danish, I've decided, although it pains me to think of all the Ancient Greek terms I have to look up and translate, shit. But I just think I can do these women the most justice in my native tongue. I'll call the series what translates to, "Besung by Sappho", with each novel having a subtitle that's just the main character's name, that is: Anaktoria, Atthis or Kleïs.

I'm really excited about it! Kinda bummed I can't start right away, with the other project going on, but I'll try to steal some writing time here and there, where possible. Like I said, this is a project where pacing isn't the issue, I'm patient with it and I know what I want from it in the end... Still, excited!

Above, you see my full collection of Sappho translations (Danish and English), as well as an art book on Sappho (Danish), some assorted Ancient Greek poetry (English) and a huge book on Archaic Greece, the time period that Sappho hails from. I originally got this as a free PDF, but got so tired of scrolling that I just bought it in the physical. It's a great book, though, I recommend it to anyone interested in these things. In the bottom right corner is my "Pink Carnation" Paperblanks notebook that has served me so well. One of the best notebooks I've ever bought. It's just taken everything in stride. Unlined, midi, elastic closure. Also recced! All my notes on Ancient Greece and Sappho are crammed in there. I don't even need the books anymore, my orderliness has been on point this one time.

My girlfriend will be away most of tomorrow, so I think I'll try getting started on an opening scene for the first of the three novels, Anaktoria. If I have the spoons tomorrow. I think they've been kinda low today.

The Heartthrob NPC in the VR Game

Still in the midst of my Cyan Wings marathon, but I'm pretty close to the end. There are only a couple older stories I haven't read yet, and I'd like to reread Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know (魔尊也想知道). Cyan Wings' writing has a way of touching my heart and making me cry.

Currently reading The Heartthrob NPC in the VR Game (全息游戏里的万人迷NPC) by Su HuaiHuang (苏怀荒). A cannon fodder NPC became self-aware and is now testing the limit of what he could do within the game engine's perimeter to hopefully save himself from certain doom. It's quite interesting so far.

This novel has multiple layers. There is the main character's battle of wits against the game engine AI, the love interest's side of the story (he's the CEO of the game company and the game engine creator), the in-game main story about the conflict between gods and demons with lots of conspiracies flying around, the players' perspective both in and out of the game, the game development team's perspective, and the live streamer side. It sounds like there are perhaps too many moving pieces floating about, but the pieces fit quite well together. My favourite part is probably the scene where the scenario writer talks about how the MC's action can be interpreted in different ways since the players aren't privy to his inner thought. (The MC is a metaphorical fox in sheep's skin, or in the tradition of Chinese internet speaks, a green tea character.)

Completely unrelated, Yofukashi no Uta got a new OP and ED by Creepy Nuts. Both the OP song and the OP credit sequence are really cool. Love the flamenco vibe.

Might try out the [community profile] sunshine_revival challenge when I have things to say.

So, not too productive this week. I've had massive brainfog both today and yesterday, can barely focus at work.
I'm just glad there's not a lot left to do on the current project, just small changes that have already been deployed to the website.

I've been having trouble getting up for work in the morning. Really, really tired. It doesn't help that its winter, so the sun rises far later than it normally would. And its so cold. The bed is so cold without you. Even though one would say you are a "cool" beauty yourself, with the way you set my face to a warm, red blush...

I called my friends tonight. Even though I was meant to be writing, its fun to socialise. I've been trying to do more of that, lately. Pretty sure there's a book club event this weekend - I'll be sure to go. I had fun. We just screwed around for a few hours, listening to music and combing through my Pinterest via screen share and laughing at messed up memes. I think even if they're far away, I felt close to them.

After the call, I whacked out around 400 words for the fanfic. Just need 600 more, then editing, then uploading. Hope to have it done by next week. Will reactivate my Twitter too, then.

Been listening to a lot of Type O Negative lately.

Good night, and may God be with you.

I figured out my book yesterday, so I think I can move forward which is a wonderful feeling. I'm less grumpy today, but I am so very tired. So. Very. Tired.

I slept horribly last night, and I just can't get myself to plow through it yet. I might take a nap, and then get busy. Today is a day for editing and really mulling over my scene list. Then, ideally, I'll be focusing fully on words tomorrow so I can finish this book once and for all.

Per usual, I've forgotten about my mission statement of joy. I really need to fix that. Seriously. Why is it so hard to stay focused on something so simple?

I mostly post about: I am Bipolar. So, it varies. My mood, life and fandoms seem to be the main topics of conversation. Plus, my homosexuality is on topic so my post can get to be adults only. Since it's FRIENDS ONLY there are no warnings.

My hobbies are: making icons, video games, my movie collection. (PHYSICAL MEDIA RULES!)

My fandoms are: Doctor Who, various yaoi anime, Friday the 13th and other horror movies, mystery TV shows like Perry Mason and Columbo. I am also big on the MCU AND DCU.

I'm looking to meet people who: Other gay men and allies. I do not have much a support system at home. So being bipolar I tend to need someone to listen. Even if they do not comment. Also, if I get to be too much, just skip the post. LOL!

My posting schedule tends to be: daily/weekly/monthly/sporadic/etc I try to get at least 3 posts a week in unless we didn't pay the internet bill.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Homophobes, racists, MAGA and other Trump supporters.

Before adding me, you should know: I can be a whiner from time to time. It's my way of getting my feeling out. If that isn't for you, I understand.
